THE INTERNALLY DISPLACED PEOPLE
After the disputed 2007 election ,more than 1000 Kenyans were killed and an estimated 650000 were displaced from their homes.The politician instigated Kenyans along ethnic lines.Eminent people were called in to calm the violence.The politicians of the day agreed to form a coalation government .One of the recomendation of the eminent person was the formation of a commission to look into cause of the violence and to recommend the way forward to prevent the problem from recurring in future.One of the recommendation of the commission which was later to be known as Waki commission recommended ;the coalition government should find ways and means of settling the internally dispaced persons .Also the commission proposed the formation of a Tribunal to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of the violence.This was to serve as justice to the victims of the violence The commission also came with the recommendation of the formation of the Truth and Reconciliation commission .The commission was mandated with reconciling the various tribes involved in the violence.On the resettlement of IDP little have been done to address their plight.Most of the money allocated to resettle them have been misappropriated among them by provincial administration.Most of this people have land where they came from,but they fear going back there since the animosity still exist.The coalition government is doing very little to reconcile the various community involved in the violence.The camps where they are living are inhabitable since they lack basic amenities like water and toilets.During rainy seasons children are most venerable to waterborne diseases.Most of the children can longer go to schools since the schools are far away from their transition camps.We are heading to 2012 and the politician are busy politicking on the power of succession and the plight of IDP is far forgotten.
On the formation of the local tribunal, the politician rejected the bill in parliament.The politician hoped the culture of impunity is there to stay.Thanks to international community thorough ICC which is determined to ensure justice is served to the victim of the violence by investigating and prosecuting the perpetrators who owe the greatest responsibilities for the violence.
